Enterprise Mobile Apps: Gain a Competitive Edge with Human Resources

App Management
Although enterprise mobility is a popular topic, often the discussion centers around flashy sales apps and the bring your own device (BYOD) movement. Mobilizing human resources, which is a cost center in most companies, is typically not the first thing that comes to mind. However, there are significant opportunities for businesses to improve profitability by mobilizing human resources processes with enterprise mobile apps. While the HR technology market is hot (57% of companies plan to make a major new HR software purchase in the next 18 months), the mobile HR technology market is even hotter. A survey from Bloomberg predicted that 60% of companies surveyed plan to provide employees with access to HR data via mobile device by 2013. While the jury is still out on 2013, there certainly are many vendors chasing this market who offer a mobile application management (MAM) software platforms specific to the HR use case. So there is software to buy, but where should a company start? What HR functions should be mobilized? All of them? When developing a mobile HR strategy, companies should look for areas where the investment would have the greatest impact. Common areas where enterprise apps help HR departments are:
  • Talent acquisition (job postings, recruiting, applications, and onboarding)
  • Payroll and benefits
  • Training: the multimedia nature of tablets render well to training videos, while an app can help HR track an employee’s completion progress on a given training program.
By mobilizing and streamlining some of their daily activities, HR employees can work more efficiently, increase productivity. However, it’s not just HR employees that can use HR enterprise mobile apps. Company managers can work more efficiently by being able to quickly process approvals such as leave requests and expense reports without having to log into a desktop system. For companies that are very shift-oriented such as those in the manufacturing and service industries, being able to review real-time scheduling information from anywhere can be quite important. What’s more, mobile connectivity to enterprise data enables managers to have access to information and analytics on their employees. This might be especially important in an environment where the people are the product, such as a consulting or law firm. In these cases, managers need to monitor the utilization of their staff and productivity on a given project to ensure they manage to client expectations and bill accordingly. Employees like automation of HR processes; it helps them to increase their productivity. What employee wants to spend their productive hours processing administrative paperwork? Much better to use the down time at lunch to quickly submit an expense report, catch up on “corporate” news, or submit a vacation request or timesheet, freeing the rest of their day to work on revenue-generating activities. Is an investment in enterprise mobile apps for HR departments worth it? ADP thinks so: according to a study done in 2011, 75% of HR decision makers in large companies said workforce productivity has improved due to a mobile HR deployment. Are you ready to bring your human resources into the mobile world?
