1:00pm MADP Session Recap

Image-1 (17) It was a packed house for Van Baker's session on the Mobile Application Development Platform (MADP) Magic Quadrant. Clearly, lots of folks are interested in creating mobile apps for their enterprise! Van estimated that enterprises have between 1,700 and 3,500 apps that they need to build and deploy meaning "waterfall development" is no longer going to work. IT needs to keep up with the fast pace of their users, "It's not a project, it's a service", Van said. Just because you got it right with your first app doesn't mean you should move on to the next. Mobile apps are moving targets that need to change along with the needs of the user. The problem is, users often cannot "define" their requirements. To understand these needs you need to observe them in their roles. Van suggests shadowing a sales person to better understand the app requirements that would be helpful or to show users a simulation of the app in development. This will also help you to understand the backend integration but remember, its not just about the functional testing, you can't forget about user acceptance testing! The role of IT is expanding and no IT group can do it all themselves. IT must leverage vendors and best of breed tools and although most people are eager to get right into the tools, the first step is understanding the needs of the business. Once the needs are understood the selection of tools and vendors is easier and better aligned with the business. Final advice for IT from Van~ quickly assess what mobile app development is already occurring in the enterprise because there will be projects underway whether IT knows about it or not.
