Mobile Application Management Balances Business & IT Needs

Over the years, a natural conflict has arisen between line of businesses (LOBs) and IT. LOB's want point solutions quickly because they are accountable for profit and loss (P&L) and where specific system functionality is required to help address a market need that’s been identified. Meanwhile, enterprise IT has its own set of requirements, including a project pipeline that needs to be properly managed and approval processes that are in place to ensure that any new technologies that are procured comply with enterprise architecture and resource requirements. Because of this tug-of-war, it’s hardly surprising that nearly one-third of all enterprise IT spending now occurs outside the purview of the IT organization, according to research by Diamond Digital. This tension has spilled over into the mobile computing arena, creating a situation that is prompting organizational leaders to determine how best to satisfy the needs of both camps. Fortunately, there are opportunities that enable this to be a win-win situation for both groups. For example, cloud computing and SaaS can make it possible for quick mobile app deployment needed to satisfy pressing organizational requirements and support business growth. Meanwhile, IT can also benefit from cloud computing and SaaS by freeing up internal resources that don’t have to be applied to managing and maintaining mobile apps while still providing IT the capability to align the cloud or SaaS platform with the organization’s enterprise architecture and compliance requirements. Mobile Application Management (MAM) can have an even more direct impact on meeting the needs of both LOBs and IT. MAM provides seamless mobile app administration for both business users and IT. Meanwhile, SaaS-based mobile application solutions enable IT to enjoy immediate and lasting productivity gains by having no software to install or maintain. In addition, IT staffers are freed from having to manually distribute or intervene with distributing enterprise mobile apps. Not only does this save resource-constrained IT staffs valuable time, it also lowers support costs as efforts to distribute, manage, and monitor in-house apps are dramatically simplified. LOBs also benefit from a SaaS-based mobile application management model since they aren't required to make sizable upfront investments in software and personnel for deployment. LOB leaders also benefit from MAM solutions through the ability to identify which enterprise mobile apps are being used by employees. Plus, they’re also able to obtain employee feedback on different mobile apps being deployed to determine the type of functionality that resonates with staffers and those apps that may require modification to help improve usability, productivity, and user adoption.
