Apple iOS7 impact on the Enterprise
Apple has made some significant updates in the iOS ecosystem for end users and the enterprise. For end users, they have a new look and feel with features that they can try out as soon as they upgrade. But for the enterprise, many of the new features are specifications and APIs waiting for developers and mobile platform providers to take advantage of – including us here at Apperian! Here’s a distilled look at the different capabilities in iOS7 we’ll see:
Secured Enterprise Data
Finally Apple is offering some goodies for enterprise customers, although many require modifying app source code and additional efforts from developers to take advantage of. New features include; app usage reporting, per app VPN, enterprise single sign-on, and pass-code encryption to help control data leakage and unauthorized access. One item that we are excited about is the managed “open-in” capabilities that will allow administrators to control which enterprise apps show up in the sharing panel.
New MDM for kiosk and shared devices (Point-of-Sale)
Changes in MDM for the retail and kiosks space include; streamlined device enrollment, silent app install, silent app update, single app mode, and airplay configuration – which make a great suite of tools to manage iOS devices (usually iPads in public spaces or high-tech cash registers). For those environments, these tools should be particularly helpful.
Improved Volume Purchase Program
The big change is that now instead of using redemption codes in the app store to “buy” an enterprise mobile app; an organization can now provide a revocable app license to users. Users have to be associated with an organization before they can be assigned licenses.
Where’s the MAM™?
We’re excited about these new enterprise capabilities Apple is opening up to the market – but it’s clear that the enterprise-sized challenge of managing the full app-lifecycle and maximizing app adoption is still an area that Apple isn’t addressing. As part of our continuing evolution, Apperian will be incorporating many of these mobile application management (MAM™) capabilities – and more – into our platform that helps our customers achieve the highest levels of app adoption.
