The 3 C’s of Enterprise Mobility Challenges

App Management

What’s holding up mobile apps in the enterprise? The primary challenges of enterprise mobility comes down to three C’s – cost, complexity, and corporate data security. The challenges seem to stem from what Stephen Sinofsky (@stevesi) deems a new era in productivity – what he calls “continuous productivity.” Because the access to data has changed from mainframes to PCs to the cloud, it’s a different business world. Sinofsky writes, “This is such a fundamental shift in the availability of information that it changes everything in how information is collected, shared and put to use. It changes everything about the tools used to create, analyze, synthesize and share information.” With the shift to always-on, always-available data, management of that data cannot depend on “yesterday’s techniques.” While we could dedicate a whole series of posts to data management, we’ll narrow this topic down to the 3 C’s of enterprise mobility challenges. Symantec recently defined how smart companies are finding ways to avoid or at least alleviate the 3 C’s of enterprise mobility in three ways;

  1. Streamlining the mobile management process
  2. Minimizing the direct financial costs by enforcing clear mobile employee policies
  3. Preventing corporate data security breaches by requiring authentication to enterprise mobile apps on all devices

Addressing Complexity – Streamline the mobile management process Mobile app development is a must, and numerous studies show this is an area where many organizations fall short. Especially on systems where important data lives. While it’s important to get data in the hands of your employees, cost and complexity go hand-in-hand. Containing app development costs requires a smart strategy. This strategy starts with the question, “What apps provide the most productivity benefits for employees?” A second level of this is to fostering a mobile app culture in your organization through smart rollouts:

  • Start small with workgroups and pilot teams.
  • Start at the top – executives should share stories about how company apps help them in the field and in their daily responsibilities.
  • Streamline access to apps through an enterprise app store.

Minimizing Costs and Risk – Start with smart policies & protect the data Minimizing costs is about being smart with app development as we covered under complexity. It’s also about being very focused on corporate data security. Symantec reports that companies with higher mobility adoption have double the security incidents (25 versus 12 for innovators and traditionals, respectively). However, the innovators saw a 14% higher revenue growth when compared to the traditionals. Containing costs and protecting corporate data can happen with a few overarching principles:

  • Ensure secure access to apps
  • Protect apps and data at the app level
  • Provide clear mobile app policies to employees

The enterprise app store also streamlines the security process because it allows IT to manage, monitor and secure the corporate data and apps while promoting enterprise mobility in the workforce. With these recommendations, enterprise mobility challenges can be contained and “continuous productivity” can reign.
