In today’s rapidly advancing digital era, many large organizations are striving to embed agility across the entire enterprise so they can become more responsive to market needs, deliver greater value to customers, and prevent disruption by competitors. According to a recent McKinsey Global survey, 75% of respondents shared that enterprise agility is a top priority for their company. However, most organizations are still in the early stages of their Agile transformation journey and are yet to achieve agility at scale. The 13th State of Agile report revealed that only 6% of respondents have Agile practices that are enabling greater adaptability to market conditions.
A successful enterprise-scale Agile transformation is adaptive and comprehensive, it requires a complete shift in the way an organization operates and impacts every facet of the enterprise – strategy, structure, processes, people, and technology. While there is no single industry-endorsed way to scale agile, we have observed that the most effective approach to introducing and sustaining transformation changes is by taking an incremental, stepwise approach. By gradually evolving from traditional practices to more Agile ways of working through a multi-legged transformation journey, your organization can measure the impact of their efforts, realize benefits at each phase, and course correct as needed while laying a strong foundation for enterprise agility that can be continuously improved upon. While it can take years for a full transformation to complete, you can start to see benefits in as little as six months depending on your organization’s commitment level, business complexity, and starting point.
Before you embark on a transformation journey, it is vital to understand your organization’s starting point by carefully assessing the current maturity level of your Agile program. This exercise helps you understand where Agile practices have begun to take root and where to focus your transformation efforts to see greater results.
To help you self-assess your Agile maturity, we created an educational asset and reference guide on how an organization’s maturity evolves as it progresses through a stepwise Agile transformation journey. As you evaluate each of the attributes, you may realize that your organization has greater maturity in one attribute over another such as your teams may be organized by value streams, but technical practices may be lagging. Use this guide to determine your organization’s starting point in key transformation areas and develop an improvement plan with strategic actions that will propel your organization to the next phase of its Agile transformation.
At a minimum, we recommend evaluating your maturity in these transformation areas:
Agile Adoption: evaluate how widespread Agile practices are within your organization. Is adoption limited to development teams or are other functions (business, operations, etc.) adopting Agile practices?
Leadership: evaluate how involved organizational leaders are in the transformation process. Are they empowering decentralized decision-making and creating a culture of continuous improvement?
Organizational Management: understand how teams are currently structured. Are they organized by projects reporting into traditional functions or are they aligned around value streams?
Technical Practices: determine how well your organization supports automated testing, continuous integration, and continuous delivery. Are you implementing engineering best practices to enable the continuous flow of value?
Value Delivery: evaluate your organization’s ability to deliver incremental value to customers. Are releases constrained by sprint boundaries or is code constantly ready for release?
Tools: evaluate the capabilities of your current tooling and how well they support enterprise agility. Does your toolchain provide visibility into the flow of value, from idea to delivery? Do you have insight into how your Agile transformation efforts are moving the needle on business outcomes and customer results?
