Gartner Research: Assess Your Constituencies Using Mobile Apps

A key factor that helps enterprises evaluate mobile app deployment methods is an assessment of the constituencies and user groups that will be served by the app catalog. Due to differences in how devices, user credentials and identity will be managed across user groups, the delineation of the following segments is a key factor in determining the optimal mix of tools to be used to power an enterprise app store.
This group consists of users who actively interact with enterprise systems from many devices and platforms. The ability to fully manage a mobile device is presumed for employees using company- owned devices. As a result, app deployment via mobile application management (MAM) or EMM products represents the ideal choice. However, a MADP can serve as an alternative in organizations with an investment in development tools.
This constituency includes part-time staff, seasonal workers, contractors and partners. An app store for nonemployees may include a smaller set of mobile apps in a managed cooperative to serve these users. (see Note 1). A per-app approach to app management and distribution is required, because these personal or partner-owned devices cannot be managed by IT. For example, some EMM or MAM tools offer the ability to place controls at the app level to restrict functions that can lead to data being compromised, such as cutting and pasting from one app to another.
This research would be incomplete if it didn't mention customer-facing apps, including applications that interface with internal systems, but are developed and deployed for the sole use of external parties. These can range from financial apps for banking institution customers to retirement benefit management apps for former employees. Due to the differences in how these apps are designed and deployed in most organizations, Gartner considers them outside the scope of the enterprise app store mandate, and they are likely to be beyond the control of the internal mobile management cohort. As a result, they are not covered in any detail in this research.
