Mac App Store: Enterprise Implications and Corporate Purchasing

App Management
Steve Jobs pulled the covers off Apple's "Mac App Store" yesterday. The promise is to provide ease of downloads, automatic updates and a central "iTunes like" capability to use downloaded applications on all of your personal Macs. But what would be in the Mac App Store? And what is the implication for enterprise, government, and large corporate purchasing? One of the requests by enterprises for the existing App Store is the ability to do "bulk purchasing" or site licenses for software. The lack of a "corporate purchasing model" frustrates companies where individual users are purchasing through iTunes on credit cards and sending in expense reports. I'll be interested to see how Apple will address the enterprise market. The next obvious question: will software providers pay 30% to distributed through Apple's channel when existing methods are already in place? Only time, and the market, will tell. Apple can expand beyond the "personal" and "family" model by reaching out and engaging the corporate market in a new way. This should include discussions with large organizations using mobile, laptop, and desktop computers, as well as the software publishers and infrastructure players.
