Top 7 Benefits of Using a Shared Services Model for Agile and ALM Success

Enterprise Agile Planning

At the end of June I will be speaking at the National Laboratories Information Technology conference in San Francisco . This is a great conference where the brightest minds in the federal technology sector gather to share experiences and knowledge. The focus of my talk is around leveraging the “shared services” model. This has proven very effective for both government agencies and enterprise IT organizations.

Specifically, the session will look at the top seven benefits of using a Shared Services Model using a real-life case study of Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia National Laboratories is operated and managed by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation. Sandia Corporation operates Sandia National Laboratories as a contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and supports numerous federal, state and local government agencies, companies and organizations.

Sandia has followed a major trend by large IT groups to alleviate the need for individual development teams to research and purchase an Agile ALM solution. They did this by standardizing on CollabNet TeamForge as their ALM platform that not only allows development teams to collaborate with other teams located anywhere in the world, but also allows developers to use the tools that makes them most productive. This standardization is accomplished by establishing a Shared Services Model within the IT group. A Shared Services Model centralizes the purchasing of an ALM development platform, and the funding and resourcing is shared and the IT department effectively becomes an internal service provider.

Sandia has a Shared Services Group within its IT department that supports software development teams internally and provides common email tools (databases, ALM applications and platform options, etc.). The case study I will share walks attendees through the scenario of a development team wanting to use CollabNet TeamForge, and how they interact with Sandia’s Shared Services Group to obtain the tools they need to be successful.

Working closely with our partners at Sandia, I will outline the following seven benefits of creating and utilizing a Shared Services Model:

1.       Saves time and improves productivity by eliminating the need for individual development teams to analyze or bid on ALM applications/platforms/tools

2.       Provides cost savings with a volume discount agreement (standard GSA purposes)

3.       Decreases legal fees with a multi-year agreement

4.       Allows organization to obtaining economies of scale

5.       Drives efficiency throughout the organization

6.       Provides high-quality applications to development teams

7.       Accelerates speed to market of quality software products

I will conclude with a Q&A, take questions and provide information that pertains directly to federally focused IT needs and requirements. If you have thoughts or questions about the Shared Services model, please ask away or comment and I’ll reply! Also, make sure to drop by the CollabNet booth #707 to learn more and see a demonstration of TeamForge.
