9 Reasons You Need an Enterprise App Store

There are almost 2,000,000 apps in the Google and Apple app stores. Among these two million apps, you can download many great ones that enhance your day-to-day personal and work life. Unfortunately, you can also stumble upon apps that exploit your mobile device.  Unsavory developers are building increasingly complex apps with spyware that can take corporate and personal data from a user’s device, and you won’t know it until it’s too late.

According to a recent Symantec survey, this is the main reason 71% of enterprises are considering deploying their own enterprise mobile apps. According to Gartner, 25% of companies will have an enterprise app store that will manage approved apps on both mobile and desktop machines by 2017. The concept of enterprise app stores have grown in recent years along with the bring your own device (BYOD) movement. As time has passed, enterprise app stores have allowed companies to incorporate mobile app security, licensing compliance, employee productivity, and more into their enterprise mobility and BYOD initiatives. Having a private and customized enterprise app store is favorable to IT departments trying to manage app use or outlaw certain apps because of security concerns. Here are 8 reasons your company needs its own enterprise app store:

  1. The company can make sure that employees can only download apps which meet the company’s corporate security policies.
  2. IT can ensure all apps in their enterprise app store have been inspected and deemed free of spyware and other security vulnerabilities.
  3. So, enterprise apps stores give the IT staff a break. By making sure that employees only download quality, spyware-free applications, it frees up the IT staff to work on more pressing issues (and to be honest, removing spyware isn’t much fun anyway).
  4. According to Michele Pelino, a Forrester research analyst, using enterprise app stores can help you make sure that employees are using the correct version of each app. "If you don't have some way of controlling that, you have people using different versions or apps that you don't want them to get access to,” says Pelino.
  5. An enterprise app store can enable app distribution to specific user groups defined by the organization.
  6. For companies that have IT regulations, such as SOX, an enterprise app store can tell the company who accessed which apps and when. This is a requirement for certain government regulations.
  7. Some enterprise app stores integrate pointers to vetted apps in the public stores (i.e. Apple App Store) to show visibility with both the public and private app stores.
  8. You can use internal application ratings on your app store to get feedback from your users. The rating system provides insights into which apps are actually being used, liked, or disliked, leading to more informed decisions about app investments.

Let’s face it, enterprise app stores are only going to become more crucial to enabling employee productivity, particularly for those who embrace BYOD. If you haven't already, get started now securing and distributing apps to your employees via a private, customized enterprise app store.
