iPhone Configuration Utility 3.2 Released - VPN Features Added

App Management

Apple just released an update to the iPhone Configuration Utility (IPCU) with version 3.2. Officially, this just supports the iOS 4.2 release. However, most changes were already made for iOS 4 back with IPCU 3.1. There are no "release notes" to indicate exactly what has changed. But here at Apperian, we specialize in Appleology and have teased out the changes! Sections that have undergone visible changes are the Restrictions and VPN. The biggest news is in the VPN section:

  • The Send All Traffic option (aka "blunt instrument") has been removed and replaced with more granular controls. Specifically, you can now decide if the VPN is initiated based "On Demand" with settings of "Always", "Never", and "Establish if needed". This is a useful change, especially when "inside the firewall" where domains cannot be reached except via VPN, but where a user wants to use direct connection to public URLs.
  • RSA SecurID support has been removed from the VPN options. We're not sure if this capability is still available via direct XML configuration, but it has disappeared from the user interface.
  • F5 SSL has been added to the list of supported VPN clients. As with Cisco and Juniper Networks, users must install both the configuration profile and the F5 BIG-IP Edge Client available in the App Store.

A minor change was also made in the Restrictions section. Apple has added the ability to allow disallow "Game Center friends", which is something most IT admins probably are not even aware of. ("Game Center" was added back in iOS 4 with the iPhone, and is now available on both iPhone and iPad.) We will keep you all posted on any other changes we find! A good reference is also the IOS Reference Article on the IPCU.
