Students to Use Scrum Development in Global Robotics Competition
Tomorrow kicks off an intense, six/week battle among high school students to see who can build the world's best 120/pound robot. That challenge will be at the forefront of young engineering minds all over the world between now and mid/February during the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). For one team // the BroncoBots, Team 1987, based out of Lee's Summit, MO // the challenge will be the kids' first introduction to scrum development techniques and the use of an agile management tool to help teams of students and adult mentors collaborate throughout the build process. Nicknamed "the Varsity Sport for the Mind," the FRC program is designed to drive interest, excitement and resume/building experience in the field of engineering among students Grades 9/12. It's part of an umbrella program targeting K/12 students with the mission to inspire science and technology leaders. For 2013, FIRST is making available over 750 individual scholarship opportunities with a total value above $16 Million. Team Broncobots has been a returning world finalist in the FRC competition for the last several years. In support of the FIRST Robotics program, VersionOne set up the Broncobots with a complimentary instance of VersionOne Enterprise Edition this week, which they will use to facilitate their scrum activities including daily standups. The scrum development model will help the team with both collaboration and accountability to make sure the 50+ people involved in the various development teams (a main robot team plus a handful of 'subsystem' teams) are all working efficiently to deliver a highly functional (and cool/enough/to/win) final product. VersionOne looks forward to cheering on Team Broncobots, but we wish all students competing in the program a rewarding and enriching experience that will stick with them wherever their dreams may take them.
