Jenkins World 2018: Day 2 Highlights

Jenkins World 2018 is a wrap! We had a great time in San Francisco meeting people who are bringing digital transformation to their organizations and talking with them about the challenges they face when scaling DevOps and Continuous Delivery strategies across teams, projects, applications, and environments.

Day 2 started with a keynote from Justin Graham, Senior Manager, Market Strategy and Ecosystem Development for Amazon Web Services. As Justin explained, the building blocks for success with cloud-native applications are containers, cloud, and culture. Cloud-native applications must be container-based, dynamically managed, and microservices-oriented.Containers offer many technical benefits around networking, security, and logging that are vital for the cloud. And loosely-coupled microservices provide resiliency and limit the “blast radius” when software failures happen. But culture is as important as the technical implementation of cloud-native applications. To drive this point home, Justin quoted Adrian Cockcroft, Vice President of Cloud Architecture Strategy at AWS: “You don’t add innovation to a culture, you get out of its way.” [caption id="attachment_20726" align="aligncenter" width="604"]Jenkins World Justin Graham of AWS speaking at Jenkins World 2018[/caption]

Remembering Robert Stroud

Tuesday morning’s keynote also included a touching tribute to our colleague and friend, Robert E. Stroud. After a few words from CloudBees Vice President of Marketing, André Pino, XebiaLabs Vice President of North America Sales, Patrick Bishop, and Vice President of Product Marketing, Lisa Wells, shared a few words about Rob and the energy, enthusiasm, and passion that he brought to XebiaLabs as Chief Product Officer. Rob’s impact on the DevOps community was evident in the room, and we honored him and his legacy with a standing ovation. If you would like to support the Stroud family at this difficult time, please consider donating to the memorial fund.

Closing Keynote: The Data Behind DevOps

Dr. Nicole Forsgren, CEO at DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA), closed Jenkins World with some of the most impactful and insightful findings from the 2018 Accelerate State of DevOps Survey. Here’s a quick look at some of the eye-popping stats Nicole presented:
  • High-performing DevOps teams:
    • Deploy 46x times more often than low performers
    • Recover from incidents 2555x faster
    • 7x less likely to have failure caused by a change
  • Elite-performing DevOps teams are 3.55x more likely to have strong availability practices
  • Functional outsourcing (development, testing, QA, operations) is bad
    • Low-performing DevOps teams are 3.9 times more likely to use functional outsourcing
  • There are five essential characteristics of cloud usage––on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity, and measured service
    • Teams that execute on these characteristics are 25x more likely to be elite DevOps performers
  • Elite-performing DevOps teams are 75x more likely to extensively use open source software
